An Introduction to: Fingertip Pulse Oximeters and SpO2 Finger Oxygen Monitors
In this article we review 5 of the best smart Fingertip Pulse Oximeters, also known as SpO2 Finger Oxygen Monitors. But before we do that, let’s familiarize ourselves with the basics of Pulse Oximetry and what these devices measure.
Pulse Oximetry is a method of measuring levels of oxygen in your blood, sometimes referred to as Oxygen Saturation (abbreviated O2sat or SaO2). It registers how well oxygen is being sent around your body. It’s recorded as a percentage of how much oxygen your blood is carrying compared to the maximum it can carry. Typically 89%, or more, of your red blood should be carrying oxygen.
Pulse Oximetry is used in various situations when it’s necessary to know levels of Oxygen Saturation, for example:
- When medical procedures require an anesthetic or sedation
- Ability to tolerate increased exercise
- Determine whether a ventilator is required to assist with breathing
- Measure effectiveness of certain medicines
- Flying or traveling to a high altitude destination
- Sleep apnea
John Hopkins Medicine states that Pulse Oximetry is also used during health checks for a person with the following conditions:
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Anemia
- Lung Cancer
- Asthma
- Pneumonia
The Pulse Oximeters we’ve reviewed are small units that clip onto a finger and use beams of light to pass through the blood in your finger to calculate the percentage of blood carrying oxygen. They also provide a pulse reading (heart rate). the American Thoracic Society consider readings from these consumer devices to be fairly accurate – expect a tolerance of +/- 2%.

Well-being
There are benefits of being able to track and measure Oxygen Saturation, particularly if you suffer from any of the conditions listed above. These readings can be shared with your healthcare provider – and some of our reviewed products will even allow you to email results directly from the companion app.
Having the ability to measure your heart rate/pulse is an added benefit, but none of these are intended to be used in prevention, diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition.
Independence
Using a Pulse Oximeter is not a replacement for advice provided by your healthcare provider, but it will supplement it, and give you an indication of Oxygen Saturation.
A Fingertip Pulse Oximeter, or SpO2 Finger Oxygen Monitor, used in conjunction with other consumer healthcare products such as Blood Pressure Readers and EKG Electrocardiograms, allow you to measure and record some useful information about the state of your health – information that can be shared with your healthcare professional.
