TV Listener: A review of the best TV Soundbars and TV Assistive Listening Devices

An Introduction to: TV Soundbars and TV Assistive Listening Devices

As many of us get older our hearing begins to get weaker – in fact about a third those aged 65 to 74 have some sort of hearing loss, and this increases 50% for those over 75 (source: National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders). This age related deterioration is known as presbycusis. So if you find the sound from your TV is becoming fainter or a little muffled – this could be the reason. This can be very frustrating and significantly reduce the enjoyment of watching your favorite TV programs or movies.

You have couple of options to address this: turn the volume up – although others watching might not appreciate this! Or maybe move closer to the television – again this may impede the view of others and put unnecessary strain on your eyes. The best option is to get a specialist TV Assistive Listening Device. Before you chose a specific product, we’ll summarize the types of TV Assistive Listening Devices and the technologies they use.

  • In-ear Necklace – these are lightweight wireless devices that hang from your ears or around your neck, they are powered by a rechargeable battery and connect to your TV via a transmitter.
  • Over-ear “traditional headphones” – these look like traditional over the ear music headphones and are powered by a rechargeable battery and connect to your TV via a transmitter.
  • TV Speaker System – this is a portable speaker that can be moved closer to the user to improve sound volume and clarity. They can be charged by mains power or a rechargeable battery.

The TV sound is sent to the headset or speaker from a transmitter that you plug into the television (into either a digital or analogue output). The wireless transmission technology is either infrared or 2.4GHz RF. Another benefit is the TV and headset volume can be controlled independently.

The choice of style will be a personal one – some prefer the portable speaker option because they are not cut-off from sounds or conversation in the room, but others prefer the more immersive sound you get from a headset.

Well-being

TV Soundbars and TV Assistive Listening Devices can reduce the frustration that many individuals with a hearing condition will associate with watching the television, particularly if you are with company who might not appreciate listening at a loud volume.

It makes a big difference to the enjoyment you’ll get from watching your favorite shows, improving your mood and lifting spirits.

On top of the increased volume and clarity these assistive devices offer, you have the benefit of being in control of your own speaker or headset and the listening volume that you choose.

Other assistive listening devices exist for those with a mild or moderate hearing condition, such as landline phones, cell phones or cordless phones for seniors – I’d highly recommend you have a look at these.

TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System

More Info

TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System: Key Features

The TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System is from one of the leaders in TV Assistive Listen devices, TV Ears. Founded in 1998, their lightweight in-ear necklace headsets have been enjoyed by over 2 million customers.

The TV Ears headset is the only device in our article that uses infrared technology. Speed of Light Infrared Technology™ is considered to have some speed advantages over both the Bluetooth and RF frequency methods – reducing any possible sound lag. There are a number of other benefits of adopting this technology – it does not need to be paired with the transmitter, it won’t interfere with any other RF frequency devices (cordless phones for example) and its completely safe to use around pacemakers.

In terms of features, there are a couple of important ones to highlight: –

120 Decibels – as TV Ears are classified as an Assistive Listening Device for the hearing impaired, this permits twice the volume of normal wireless headsets. 120dB should be loud enough for anyone with moderate hearing loss.

Voice Clarifying Technology – TV Ears amplifies and clarifies the sound transmitted from the TV whilst reducing background sounds – the conversion to mono from a stereo source also increases clarity. However, I would have liked the option to choose either mono or stereo.

Lightweight & Comfortable – this style of assistive listening device has the advantage of being very light weight, particularly good for watching long movies, where heavier devices might become uncomfortable for some. The foam ear-tips are not only pleasant to wear, but also let some ambient sounds/conversation in so you’re not totally cut off from your surroundings.

Great for couples – this package includes one headset, but the included cradle enables you to charge two headsets at a time – individual headsets can be purchased separately.

This is not a cheap product – but if spend a lot of time watching and enjoying TV, then it’s a sound investment.

The SEREONIC Wireless TV Speaker looks very similar to the SIMOLIO Speaker System, and apart from not having a headset included, it has the same features plus a few bonus ones.

The wireless speaker is a great option for those who don’t like to wear over-the-ear headphones or in-ear necklace headsets, but prefer to be part of the conversation or social interaction. The sound from the SEREONIC is loud and a real boost to the TV speaker. A great package, that you can expand to include an additional speaker (sold separately). • SIMPLE, USER-FRIENDLY DESIGN - Simply connect the wireless transmitter (which also doubles as a recharging base) to your TV, place the speaker wherever you'd like it, and use the dial on the front of the speaker to adjust the volume to your liking. You'll be amazed how simple it is to use, making it excellent for all ages, including the elderly & senior citizens!
  • ULTIMATE PORTABLE CONVENIENCE - Our lightweight speaker lasts up to 8 hours on a charge, has a wireless range of 100 ft., & has a built-in carrying handle for ultimate convenience & portability. By utilizing Radio Frequency (RF) technology, our system is able to provide longer range, lower latency, and better reliability than Bluetooth, and the signal can carry through walls (unlike cheaper Infrared systems).
  • ENHANCES DIALOGUE & IMPROVES LISTENING EXPERIENCE - Let's face it, your TVs built-in speakers aren't very good. Many people turn to surround sound systems or soundbars to correct this, but these systems usually focus on making explosions sound cool, NOT on making it easier to understand the dialogue. Our system is specifically designed to enhance the dialogue, making it easier for hard of hearing & hearing impaired people to follow along without needing to blast the volume.

Conclusion

The two that stood out for us were the TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System – they had the clearest voice quality and loudest volume. For overall sound quality we loved the No products found..

For those of you who prefer not to wear a headset, we’d highly recommend SEREONIC Wireless TV Speaker for Hard of Hearing for its great selection of features, accessories, and deep/rich sound quality.
